Proud to WorkA Pictorial History of
Michigan’s Civilian Conservation Corps
by Annick Hivert-Carthew
Filled with personal photos and stories of veterans, Proud to Work shows the Michigan CCC at work, rest, and play.
“It is without a doubt the best story of the CCC that has ever been written.”
—Frank Munger, CCC Veteran
“Fresh, magnetic, and historically important, Proud to Work speaks in the actual voices of the CCC youngsters whose motto was “We Can Do It.” Listen to their stories about civic service and lives shaped by teamwork and the wilderness. Linger over their photos. Puff out your chest, for this is America at its best.”
—Dale M. Herder, Ph.D., Chair, Bring Back the CCC Committee
“Proud to Work reminds me strongly of Studs Terkel’s seminal Hard Times, only with exceptional commentary of the author’s own. Described as the last mythic decade, the Depression 1930s are slipping away from us along with those who experienced them firsthand; in a few years we’ll have nothing but a few hundred feet of worn-out documentary footage and excellent personal histories like Annick Hivert-Carthew’s to remind us how close we came to the edge and of the magnitude of the machinery that dragged us back. Proud to Work should be in the curriculum of every school in Michigan.”
—Loren D. Estleman, author of the Amos Walker Detroit mystery series
“Annick Hivert-Carthew has captured an important part of American history, and the spirit of Michigan’s young men during a desperate time, in a book that preserves valuable memories from our past. This is a book that everyone should read.”
—Pat McKay, Museum Director, Rochester Hills Museum
