Queen of the Island

by Jo Ann Mazoué

In 1850, James Strang led his Mormon followers to Beaver Island, where he established a kingdom and proclaimed himself monarch. As Strang created his “Paradise,” his wife struggled to leave the island and the threat of polygamy.

This exciting historical narrative examines this powerful and often ruthless man from the perspective of his frequently neglected first wife, Mary. The arrival, coronation, and brief rule of King Strang over Beaver Island come to life through the eyes of his lawful wife.
